Lacquerware

Lacquer wares were knwon in China for 2000 years. Laid on different materials like wood, bamboo or paper, it was used to waterproof vessel and decorate furniture.

Carved Beijing lacquer ware comprised of multiple layers with a remarkable chiseling work and and often  in polychrome according to the depth of the sculpturesand Coromandel lacquer ware with incrustations of ivory, semi-precious stones or inlay of mother of pearl are the most famous.

Japanese artists also developed very refined lacquer work notably with the usage of gold leaves and dust underneath a layer of transparent lacquer for tiny decorations on the inro.

We equally find work by Burmans , Khmers, Thai or Vietnamese light, elegant and in great variety.These  lacquer ware are also to collect.
